Charlie's Review

7/16/2014

In the latest review of Mr. Boardwalk on Goodreads, "Charlie" begins in this way:
I received this First Reads book from Goodreads.com for review.
I put off reading this book, for a month, simply because I didn't think it would interest me that much. You see, I'm an Ocean City, New Jersey guy, dating back to the 40's to the early 60's. I worked several summers on and near the Boardwalk and had a great time as one should working near the beach. Ahhhh, the times.
We're not sure why he applied for a free book if he didn't think the subject would interest him. But he goes on to say that, once he got into the book, he liked it, and he gives it five stars. Thanks, Charlie!

The Jersey Shore Comes to Mount Airy

Serendipity strikes! It turns out that noted photographer Michael M. Koehler has recently published a book of photos of the boardwalk at Seaside Heights and Seaside Park (images taken before Hurricane Sandy). The book will be featured along with our Mr. Boardwalk at Big Blue Marble Bookstore in Mount Airy, Philadelphia, on Thursday, August 7, at 7:00 p.m. You'll be able to hear the shore and see the shore, and maybe taste the shore if we bring some taffy, all without getting sand in your toes.

Five Stars *****

Two new five-star reviews of Mr. Boardwalk on Amazon:
This is a wonderful book so full of description that you can feel, see, and taste the boardwalk. ...
A blend of wisdom, humor, action, authenticity, and magic, juggled masterfully by a consummate showman.
Though the book is about a young man who juggles, we have not yet had a real juggler at an author appearance. Anyone want to volunteer?

"Evocative," "Colorful," "Picturesque"

Latest Amazon review of Mr. Boardwalk:
This is a beautifully written, evocative coming of age story. It brought back vividly picturesque memories of Atlantic City.
The reviewer is Julie Gold. We're told that's THE Julie Gold, Grammy-winning songwriter. She must have fallen for the name of the 1970s senior-prom band mentioned in the novel, "Petrified Grapefruit."

Also there's a recent Goodreads comment by "Steven":
A wonderfully evocative tale of Atlantic City before the casinos, young love, growing up and coming to terms with one's life. Rich with the smell of the ocean and the colorful characters who populate the Boardwalk. Highly recommended.
That word evocative comes up a lot in comments about the novel. For good reason.

And to evoke even more, we're working on a combined presentation with a photographer who has taken amazing pictures of the Atlantic City boardwalk. More on that soon.
